“She did not invent the hot comb. She invented hair care products,” author A’Lelia Bundles said about her great-great grandmother, the legendary Madam C.J. Walker.

Bundles corrected the common misconception about the historical account of her family members’ fame and wealth, and shared the focus of her latest book about her great-grandmother, A’Lelia Walker, the daughter of Madam after whom she is named, during a book tour stop hosted by City Men Cook at The Hall of State in Dallas’ Fair Park on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025.

City Men Cook, an annual Father’s Day event founded by Terry Allen, served as sponsor of the conversation and “Joy Goddess” book signing, which began with remarks from Allen and a spoken word performance by Derrick Walker, followed by the introduction of Bundles by Kaye Flewellen who then co-led the on-stage Bundles conversation with Allen.

Bundles shared many photos showcasing the empire of uplifting others through hair products that her great-great grandmother built. The socialite aspects of her great-grandmother Walker’s life was a new revelation to many in the audience. A Q&A discussion followed, answering many questions, including thoughts on the Netflix series depicting her revered relative.

At the end of the discussion that had the attention of over 50 attendees, Allen presented History Maker awards to several longtime Dallas community leaders, including Dr. Harry Robinson, Dr. Dorothy Bland and Cheryl Smith. A reception, with catering provided by Chef Felicia Guimont, took place outside the auditorium while people purchased books and waited in line to have them signed by Bundles.

This event served as the kickoff to City Men Cook’s upcoming 25 year anniversary with more events to come leading to what is dubbed as the “largest Sunday dinner in North Texas.” For more information visit citymencook.com
