Sixteen years after the last film, Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?” franchise is back, and this time the whole cast lands in Lake Como, Italy.

“Why Did I Get Married Again” hits Netflix September 9, and Michael Jai White, returning as Marcus, is not shy about how he feels.

“My bold statement: it is the best third movie ever,” White said in an exclusive interview. “Everybody is better. You’re seeing actors in their higher capacity.”

The story follows Marcus and Angela’s daughter as she plans her wedding, a “father of the bride” setup that White says was “a lot of fun” to play. But underneath the laughs, the movie digs into something White says he has never seen a film tackle: the pressure parents put on their kids by hiding their own mistakes.

“The tendency for parents is to shield their children from their wrongdoings,” White said. “Sometimes that sets an example for the kids that’s hard for them to match up to because they don’t know the flaws of the parents.”

His wife, Gillian White, put it plainly: “Once it’s all out, that’s when healing can happen.”

White is a martial artist with multiple black belts, and he says the discipline from that training has shaped everything from his acting to how he shows up as a father. Before Hollywood, he was a teacher working with at-risk kids, an experience he says gave him a sense of empathy he still leans on as a writer and director.

The film also features a young cast that White calls “absolutely amazing.”

As for why the franchise keeps resonating, White points to honesty. “It dares to be truthful about marriage,” he said. Perry’s films, he noted, often reach people who would never set foot in a therapist’s office. “Sometimes you get help from movies. It’s on the artist to put that truth in there.”

“Why Did I Get Married Again” streams on Netflix September 9.
