U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett made a surprise appearance Saturday night at Usher and Chris Brown’s concert to give the two artists a congressional recognition.
Crockett, who represents the Dallas-area 30th Congressional District of Texas, came onstage with State Rep. Venton Jones (D-Dallas) during the second show of The R&B Tour’s three-night stop at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
“Right now, we are experience Black joy to the highest level and I wanted to make sure we document that in the Congressional Record,” she said onstage, according to social media video shared by producer RoccStar.
“Right here in Dallas, we got a real one,” Crockett concluded before telling the crowd to enjoy the show and embracing Brown on stage. The singer then thanked her and the crowd.
The Congressional Record entry is titled “Recognizing the Artistry of Chris Brown and Usher Raymond” and commends “the extraordinary accomplishments” of the pair “whose talent and influence have helped shape contemporary R&B and popular music,” according to the social media video.
The moment quickly sparked controversy, with online commenters pointing out Brown’s past domestic abuse. In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault relating to a domestic violence incident with Rihanna, his then-girlfriend.
The controversy comes as Crockett’s time in Congress draws to an end. Her term in the U.S. House of Representatives will expire in January, and she lost to State Rep. James Talarico in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate earlier this year. Democrat Frederick Haynes and Republican Everett Jackson are running to succeed Crockett in the U.S. House.
