Living paycheck to paycheck has become a reality for millions of Americans, but personal finance expert Anthony O’Neal believes it doesn’t have to stay that way.

During a recent appearance on Get Up Mornings with Erica Campbell, the bestselling author shared practical advice from his new book, Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck, offering listeners a roadmap to improve their finances and build lasting wealth.

According to O’Neal, the first step toward financial freedom is creating a budget.

He encouraged people to think of a budget as giving every dollar a specific job before the month begins.

“I need you to create a monthly money vision,” O’Neal said. “Give every single dollar a mission.”

He explained that a proper budget should account for all income and expenses so that every dollar has a purpose. Doing so, he said, creates “margin,” or extra money that can be directed toward savings and future financial goals.

Erica Campbell then asked O’Neal about the pressure many people feel to appear successful, especially on social media, even when they’re struggling financially.

O’Neal didn’t hesitate to identify debt as one of the biggest obstacles preventing people from building wealth.

He noted that many consumers have become comfortable financing everything from smartphones to other everyday purchases, making it harder to achieve long-term financial stability.

To eliminate debt, O’Neal recommends using the debt snowball method. The strategy involves listing debts from the smallest balance to the largest, making minimum payments on all accounts while aggressively paying off the smallest debt first. As each balance disappears, the money used for that payment is rolled into the next debt, creating momentum over time.

“I don’t mind you having the nice things,” he said. “I just want to make sure that social media doesn’t own you.”

Mr. Griff shifted the conversation toward generational wealth, asking what Black families can begin doing today to better prepare future generations financially.

O’Neal said investing early can make a tremendous difference. Although he doesn’t have children yet, he revealed that he’s already contributing $100 every month to a 529 college savings plan for a future child.

By starting now, he hopes to eventually present that child with more than $100,000 to help pay for college or other educational expenses.

“I was thinking about you before you even came,” O’Neal said, explaining the message he hopes to pass along one day.

He emphasized that his mission goes beyond simply helping people earn more money. Instead, his goal is to help families experience financial freedom and create opportunities that last for generations.

Before wrapping up the interview, O’Neal encouraged listeners to put the lessons in his book into practice, saying those who follow its five-step plan could see major improvements in their financial situation within 18 to 24 months.

For O’Neal, financial freedom starts with intentional decisions today that can create lasting security tomorrow.
