Former Vice President Kamala Harris is warning voters that President Donald Trump is trying to make it more difficult to vote by mail ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Harris addressed the issue in a video posted to Instagram Thursday (August 27) after the Supreme Court lifted a lower-court injunction that had blocked parts of Trump’s executive order from being implemented in 23 states and Washington, D.C.
“He’s trying to make it more difficult for you to vote by mail,” Harris said in the video, referring to Trump.
“By the way, he votes by mail from Mar-a-Lago,” she added. “But he doesn’t want you to vote by mail.”
Trump’s order directs the federal government to create lists of eligible voters and requires the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail ballots only to voters on those lists.
The Supreme Court did not rule on whether the order is legal, instead finding that the states challenging it had sued too early because the Postal Service had not yet finalized its rules implementing the order, according to the Associated Press.
The legal fight shifted again after the Supreme Court decision when U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani temporarily blocked the Postal Service from enforcing key parts of the administration’s new rules, putting the restrictions on hold for 14 days, PBS News reported.
The rules would require states to provide the Postal Service with lists of voters eligible to receive mail ballots and follow specific requirements for ballot envelopes. The Postal Service has said it could refuse to deliver mail ballots from states that do not comply, according to the AP.
The timing is significant as the first general election mail ballots are expected to be sent to voters next week. The Trump administration has appealed Thursday’s ruling, setting up another potential Supreme Court fight, the AP reported.
In her Instagram caption, Harris urged voters to turn out in large numbers in November.
“They can put more obstacles in our way, but they cannot take away our power,” she wrote. “Our answer is to show up, make our voices heard, and turn out in numbers that are too big to rig.”
