With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life lived to its fullest, we announce the passing of John Lee Turner, affectionately known to many as “GEECHEE,” on August 7, 2026, in Dallas, Texas. Born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1953, in Carthage, Panola County, Texas, John’s life was a resounding testament to resilience, generosity, and love.
From his earliest days, John radiated a warmth and intelligence that won him fast friends and left lasting impressions. He pursued his education at Julius C Frazier Elementary, Sunnyvale Elementary, and Forney High School. His natural curiosity, ambition, and sharp mind propelled him to notable achievements throughout his journey.
John’s adventurous spirit led him to serve his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Army, with posts in South Korea and Vietnam. He carried the stories, discipline, and sense of duty from his service throughout his life, and held a lasting respect for fellow veterans.
A true entrepreneurial spirit, John was the proud owner of JOHN’S DOLLAR STORE & MORE, an anchor in its community, as well as Quality Mart-A Beauty Supply Source and a thriving Junk Removal Services business. His “hustler by nature” spirit was matched only by the open-handed way he gave back. With a strong faith as his guide, he founded the Here and Now Street Ministry, dedicating his time and heart to feeding the homeless and serving those in need. John’s compassion was not reserved only for family and friends—he extended it freely to anyone who crossed his path, earning the reputation of a man with a free heart and a giving spirit.
Family was always at the core of John’s world. He was a devoted father and a great provider, his pride in his children evident in every accomplishment and gentle word. He is lovingly remembered by his sons: Johnny Lee Jones, Kevin Raashad Turner, Andre Laforo Smith, and Kareem Abdul Taylor; and by his daughters: Davetta Turner-Milliner, Khalilah Deshae Busby, Khandi Busby Moore, and Khrystal Busby, as well as his son-in-law, Eric Milliner, Sr. John’s bond with his brother, Anthony Dewayne Turner, Sr., was marked by deep respect and mutual support. His cherished relationships extended to his dear aunt Annie Bell, and cousins Leon, Carolyn, Walter BB, Mary Lou, Louise, Pauline, Gloria, Willie Earl, Betty Ruth “Tiny”, and Robert.
In addition to those who survive him, John is preceded in death by his beloved parents, James Clearnon Ingram and Bobbie Lue Simpson; his son John Milton Busby; his brothers Raymond Earl Hughes and Kentis Earl Turner; his aunts Geneva, Katy, Beatrice, Eunice, and Ganie Lucell; his uncles, Robert, James, David, and Larry; and his cousins Christy, Freddie, Connie, Charles Earl, David, Joseph, James, Freddie Stevens, Bobby, Curtis, John L, Raymond, and Linda Jo. Their memories live on through the stories, love, and laughter John continued to share with all who knew him.
John lived life with zest. He was known for his impeccable style, his love of taking photos and capturing memories on video, and the joy he found watching the Cowboys, listening to good music, and preparing meals for those around him. Friends and family alike fondly recall his lead vocals in the group John Turner and the Dynamic Souls, a source of joy and pride. Whether through music, business, or friendship, John had an infectious presence—easily making friends, lighting up a room, and always striving to uplift others.
A man of abiding faith, John adored his mother, held a steadfast respect for his brothers, and was deeply shaped by his role as a father and provider. Highly intelligent and remarkably self-sufficient, he was well liked by all who knew him—a pillar of strength, humor, and kindness in the lives of many.
As we gather to remember and celebrate John’s remarkable life, we invite friends, family, and community to join us for viewing 12:00pm to 6:00pm and a wake to follow at Golden Gate Funeral Home-Dallas-ALLENE, 4155 S R. L. Thornton Fwy, Dallas, TX 75224, on August 26, 2026, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral services will follow at the same location on August 27, 2026, at 11:00am. John will be laid to rest with honor at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211, at 1:30pm.
