Dr. Andrea Humphrey Shares Why the Right Circle Matters
When asked what inspired the book, Humphrey kept her message simple.
“Nobody becomes their best self all by themselves,” she said, explaining that every person needs the right relationships to grow, lead and thrive. She pointed to the biblical reminder that “it’s not good that we be alone,” saying meaningful connections are essential in every season of life.
Erica Campbell noted that personal growth often requires people to reevaluate their relationships and asked how someone can tell the difference between a friendship that’s simply going through a rough patch and one that’s no longer healthy.
Humphrey said the answer comes down to alignment.
“Not everybody’s aligned with your purpose,” she explained. “Not everybody’s aligned with who God intended for you to be in this season.”
At the same time, she cautioned against quickly cutting people out of your life. Instead, she encouraged listeners to perform what she called “friendship audits” and “relationship audits” to determine who belongs in their current season. She added that relationships don’t always have to end permanently. If handled with maturity and respect, people may reconnect later when life changes.
The conversation also addressed a feeling many people experience: constantly giving to others without receiving the same support in return.
Humphrey encouraged anyone in that situation to start with honest self-reflection before assuming everyone else is the problem. She said it’s important to ask, “What’s my part in it?” rather than immediately believing others are against you.
She also reminded listeners that the harvest from their kindness may not come from the same place where they planted the seed.
“There have been times where I’ve sown in one space and looked to reap in that same space,” she said. “The harvest was coming in a whole different direction.”
Humphrey explained that the four types of people highlighted in her book each serve a unique purpose. Cheerleaders encourage you, coaches help you discover potential you may not see in yourself, comrades recognize patterns in your life and offer honest accountability, and champions advocate for you behind closed doors by speaking your name in rooms you’ve never entered.
As the interview wrapped up, Humphrey shared that after decades of leadership experience, including 40 years working with Disney and other organizations, she’s focused on helping others build stronger lives and stronger communities.
Her message was clear: success isn’t a solo journey. With the right people in your corner, growth becomes not only possible but sustainable.
