Garland Police will increase Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) patrols began Friday, August 14, through Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2026, as part of a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) grant program targeting impaired and underage drinking and driving.
During the enforcement period, officers will focus on nighttime hours using both marked and unmarked patrol vehicles to identify and remove impaired drivers from the roadway.
A first-time DWI conviction in Texas can result in:
- Fines up to $2,000
- Driver’s license suspension for up to one year
- Up to 180 days in jail
Beyond court penalties, the financial impact of a DWI arrest can exceed $17,000 when factoring in legal fees, bond costs, court-ordered classes, ignition interlock requirements, and increased insurance rates.
Garland Police encourage residents and visitors to plan ahead:
- Designate a sober driver
- Use a rideshare service
- Call a taxi
- Stay where you are – don’t drive impaired
