When you’re navigating breast cancer survivorship, the last thing on your mind is probably your bones.

While Black women generally have higher bone mineral density compared to white women, the National Council on Aging reports that we still face greater hurdles in bone health outcomes, including:

  • Higher rates of fractures and worse recovery following those fractures.
  • Less frequent osteoporosis screening and delayed diagnosis.

Blessties, it’s time to start thinking about your bones.

Why Naturopathy?

Naturopathic medicine focuses on whole-body wellness through nutrition, lifestyle, and natural interventions. While there are medicines that can help Blessties protect their bone density and health, naturopathy can gently but effectively support bone strength.

1) Nutrition & Supplements

  • Calcium & Vitamin D: Build bones with dairy or plant-based sources like leafy greens, beans, fortified juices, and fish.
  • Magnesium, Vitamin K, Boron, Zinc, Vitamin C: These nutrients support bone formation and mineral absorption. Foods like nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and colorful fruits are excellent sources.
  • Supplements: Depending on your dietary needs and your body, you may need the extra help of supplements for the nutrients listed above. Talk to your doctor about what supplements and dosages would be best for you.

2) Movement

  • Weight-bearing exercises—such as walking, dancing, strength training, or stair climbing—help to strengthen bones and improve balance. Moving once a day is incredibly valuable in helping prevent falls and fractures. Remember: consistency is key, even if that means starting with ten minutes a day of movement.

3) Lifestyle Choices

  • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol, both of which can accelerate bone loss and hinder calcium absorption.
  • Black women are often under-screened for osteoporosis and bone loss. Regular DEXA scans (bone density tests) are recommended—especially for breast cancer survivors on aromatase inhibitors or who’ve undergone chemotherapy.

We know that Blessties have a lot on their plates, but it’s never too late to start prioritizing your bone health. These naturopathic approaches are one big step towards strengthening and loving your bones.
