Superb Woman: WYOMIA TYUS

Wyomia Tyus was born in Griffin, GA and raised on a dairy farm. She ran track as a student at Tennessee State University and at age 19 participated in the 1964 Summer Olympics. She has three gold medals and one silver. After retiring from international sports, Tyus coached at Beverly Hills High School, and was a founding member of the Women’s Sports Foundation. She was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Tyus was a goodwill ambassador to Africa and she was featured in a calendar of HBCU athletic greats for Black History Month.
