Dear Editor:
From the flagrant disregard for congressional authority and governmental checks and balances to the defiance of Supreme Court orders requiring due process, one thing is abundantly clear: our country is in a constitutional crisis. The right to due process includes the right to a fair hearing, the right to counsel, and the right to humane treatment, guaranteed to all persons, not just citizens.
Tufts University graduate student, Rumeysa Ozturk, in the absence of criminal charges and due process, was forced into a waiting vehicle and detained. Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, despite having an order protecting him from deportation, was deported along with 137 others to a brutal prison in El Salvador, all without due process.
ICE arrests in Southwestern PA have nearly tripled, and many may have been without due process.Furthermore, violating due process rights of immigrants helps set a precedent for the mistreatment of other minorities and other vulnerable populations and threatens due process for all of us.
Attend protests. Call your Congresspersons. Donate to organizations taking legal action. To be silent is to allow the U.S. to continue sliding toward autocracy.
