A Geriatrician Explains: Resources Every Caregiver Needs for Veteran and Elder Care

For many families, navigating the world of elder care can feel overwhelming—especially when you’re caring for someone who once served our country. In the early days of medical training, one of the first questions clinicians were taught to ask was simple but deeply important: “Have you had the honor of serving your country?” That question opens the door to a wide network of support that too many veterans and their families don’t realize they’re entitled to.

The Power of Tapping Into Veteran Resources

Since the 1970s, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has led the way in geriatric care, offering services that can make an enormous difference for aging veterans. But as any caregiver knows, the VA is a massive system—full of resources, yes, but also full of red tape. That’s where community care managers come in.

These professionals—often experienced social workers or nurses—understand the VA inside and out. Through the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, families can search by zip code and instantly find certified elder-care consultants who know exactly how to navigate local services. Their certification guarantees they’ve met strict education and training requirements, so you’re not guessing at their expertise—you’re assured of it.

While private care managers can cost anywhere from $50 to $250 an hour, most families don’t need them every day. A few hours to build a care plan—and periodic check-ins—can save families countless hours of stress and confusion. Many caregivers even pool resources to cover the cost, because the value is that meaningful. And for families with limited income, local Area Agencies on Aging offer similar services on a sliding scale, ensuring no one has to face the journey alone.
