On Thursday, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was sentenced to five years probation and 30 days in jail for his role in a multi-vehicle crash last year. Attorney Royce West, who represents Rice, addressed the media following the hearing to provide an official statement from his client and share insight into Rice’s growth since the incident.
Rice, in a written statement read by West, said he deeply regrets what happened and takes full responsibility for his actions. He called it a moment of failure that impacted many people including the victims, their families, the Kansas City Chiefs organization, his own family, teammates, fans, and the community.
Rice also acknowledged the serious consequences of the incident and expressed a commitment to learning from the situation. He shared that over the past year, he has focused on personal and spiritual development, including connecting with Pastor Richie Butler of Dallas. According to the statement, that time has helped him reflect on his faith and begin the process of making amends.
Attorney West told reporters that Rice has no previous criminal history and is considered a law-abiding citizen. He emphasized that Rice took care of the victims’ medical needs and has shown sincere disappointment in himself. West noted that Rice understands the seriousness of the situation and that a judge will be watching his actions moving forward.
West also pointed to Rice’s role as a father of two boys and said that Rice recognizes what’s at stake not just for his career, but for his family as well. He added that while the incident was a setback, Rice does not want to be judged solely by that moment and is committed to staying on the right path.
Rice is expected to report to Kansas City Chiefs training camp on Monday as the team prepares for the 2025–26 NFL season. According to West, Rice will serve his 30-day sentence in Dallas County.
