BIG MAMA SAID: Every Dog Has Its Day – Mass Incarceration Must END!!

In a world overwhelmed with constant noise, Big Mama’s voice stood out as a beacon of wisdom and faith. She guided not only her immediate family but also a vast audience of 235 relatives spanning generations. Though Big Mama’s wisdoms were shared from her back porch, in today’s world they would be considered a masterclass in influence, akin to a social media playbook.

Big Mama often said, “Every dog has its day,” meaning that everyone will eventually find success or luck at some point in their life. This expression is often used to encourage those who are currently facing tough times or setbacks.

I believe I have been given a gift and an assignment from God to be a change agent, often through disruption. However, those who resent me and those whose E.G.O. (Easing God Out) changes sometimes block my journey and try to cancel my assignment. But every time I face a blockage or a closed door, God opens a window or provides a detour, and I find a way to succeed. This reminds me of Big Mama’s wisdom: “Every dog has its day.”

For instance, during the early 2000s, my business partners and I developed a program focused on entrepreneurship for the formerly incarcerated. Over 24 months, we helped 100s of individuals including those transitioning out of prison, creating owner managed businesses and jobs and generating over $730,000 in gross income as new business owners. Remarkably, only one person returned to prison.

Despite this success, we couldn’t replicate the program because organizations delivering social services to the formerly incarcerated felt threatened by our achievements.

Yet, with my church members, laat weekend at the Multifaith End Mass Incarceration 2024 Let My People Go Un-Conference, I met U.S. Senator Dr. Raphael Warnock, Senior Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, along with over 150 other individuals who listened to me.

Now, this dog has his day. I am doing this for my son, David.

Throughout my journey, I’ve faced numerous obstacles and setbacks, but Big Mama’s words have always kept me grounded and hopeful. Each challenge has been a stepping stone, leading me closer to my di- vine purpose. Big Mama’s timeless wisdom reminds us all that persistence, faith, and resilience are key to overcoming adversity. Indeed, every dog has its day, and through faith and perseverance, our day will surely come.
