Mother Matteel Weathersby Brown

Mother Matteel Weathersby Brown was born in Baltzer, MS. on July 18, 1930, the second child Emment and Mary Weathersby.

Mother Matteel Weathersby Brown was born in Baltzer, MS. on July 18, 1930, the second child Emment and Mary Weathersby.

The family moved to Shelby, MS. in 1949 and she started school in Mound Bayou, MS.

Matteel was united in holy matrimony in 1956 to Willie “Son” Brown. They moved to Chicago for a few years, then she moved back to Shelby where she joined the Macedonia M.B. Church, under the leadership of Rev. W.L. Lewis, and Rev. E.L. Young, and now Pastor Charles Hall.

Matteel served on the Macedonia Mother’s Board for several decades and she was recognized and honored as being the oldest member of the Macedonia Church on March 24, 2024.

She studied in Bolivar County and did her training at Texas Southern University in Houston, TX. After receiving her Headstart Certificate in 1963, Matteel started working in the Bolivar County Headstart in Shelby until she retired in 1998.

Matteel was one of the members who was involved in The Shelby Mississippi Civil Rights Movement “Boycott in 1968.”

Matteel was preceded in death by her husband Willie (Son) Brown, her mother Mary Weathersby, father Emment Weathersby; Sisters Iona “Peaches” Grooms, Vera “Doll” Weathersby, Alma Rose Williams and Barbara Weathersby Hughs; Brothers Ledell Weathersby, Walter Weathersby, Henry Weathersby and Rev. V. J. Weathersby; Sons Louis Earl Weathersby, Emment Weathersby, Anthony Carl Brown and Walter Lee Weathersby.

Matteel leaves to cherish her memories (FIVE GENERATIONS): One brother James “Bonnie” Weathersby (Diana); Two daughters Shirley Young of Las Vegas NV, Debra Brown Sturns (Vernell) of Fort Worth, TX; Three sons – Harry Weathersby (Vicki) of Houston TX, Ardes Brown Johnson (Jackie) of DeSoto, TX, and Frederick Oneal Brown (Rochelle) of Dallas, TX. She has 32 Grandchildren, 68 Great grandchildren, five Great, Great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
