Anytime I have an opportunity to share space with someone great, I seize it.

Such was the case at the South Dallas Business and Professional Women’s Club’s 52nd Annual Trailblazers Luncheon, last weekend.

The organization, of which Mrs. Kathryn Lacy Mitchell is a member, honored her with the Icon Award.

It was one of many honors she has received over her prestigious career as an educator, active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and servant leader in the community and her field of studies.

There she sat, looking absolutely beautiful.

At 104 years, she is the epitome of all things noble and I felt honored to be able to walk up to her and speak.

As I leaned over to hug her, I never assumed she recognized me, but even as she appeared to, I whispered my name in her ear and thanked her for all she has done to make this world a better place.

Her life’s story is so impressive and worthy of appearing in history books. And thanks to Linda Lamar, who is filming a documentary on her life, many more will learn of this trailblazing heroine.

Hailing from East Texas, she attended two HBCUs (Texas College for her Bachelor’s Degree and Texas Southern University for her Master’s Degree). She spent more than three decades in Dallas Independent School District and used what she had to benefit society, helping to shape the lives of so many young minds. Clearly she loved teaching and pouring into youth because after retiring, she volunteered with a program for seniors who were assigned to low-performing schools.

I can’t say enough about the wonderful Mrs. Kathryn Lacy Mitchell.  Yes, members of South Dallas BP&W Club, she is definitely an Icon and this Superb Woman, because of the many she lifted as she climbed, and nurtured even if they didn’t share the same bloodline; she is our Mother of the Year!
