Charlotte women’s basketball head coach Tomekia Reed, who built Jackson State into a SWAC powerhouse before taking over the 49ers program, is taking a leave of absence.

Director of Athletics Kevin White said Reed would be away from the team due to medical reasons, he said in a statement.

“Coach Reed has our full love and support as she manages her health and recovery,” White said in a statement. “We know Niner Nation and the women’s basketball community will be respectful of her privacy and continue to offer their support as well. Our program remains in good hands as Coach Reed has a connected staff more than capable of continuing to build a winning culture here at Charlotte.”

Reed, hired by Charlotte in April 2024, arrived after a highly successful five-year run at Jackson State, where she led the Tigers to three consecutive SWAC regular-season titles and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.

Under her guidance, Jackson State became one of the premier HBCU women’s basketball programs in the nation.

Associate head coach and recruiting coordinator LaShonda Cousin will serve as the interim head coach during Reed’s absence. Cousin previously worked alongside Reed for six seasons at Jackson State before joining her on the Charlotte staff.
