Morehouse College alum Alex Maganda is proving his resilience after spending months in an immigration detention center and being deported to Mexico, a country he left when he was 5 years old. Maganda, who was released from immigration custody after getting an overwhelming amount of support from his community, is now encouraging many more people to follow their dreams.

What is Alex Maganda doing to uplift his community?

The HBCU has launched his inspirational journey on social media, using the  #LifeAfterDeportationtoMexico.

“Still rebuilding. Still greatful. Still moving forward,” Maganda said in a recent post, per Capital B Atlanta.

The former college football player has been sharing photos and inspiring words on Instagram to show how he’s adjusting to life in Mexico.

“One thing I realized is that everything always ends up working out… Sometimes even better than I imagined,” he wrote in one of his recent posts while sharing images of himself relaxing on a beach.

What happened to Alex Maganda?

Maganda was detained by immigration agents during a traffic stop in Dallas in June. He was then held at Texas’s Blue Bonnet Detention Facility for months. Carrie Nguyen, Maganda’s attorney, said he was protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA, which shields undocumented children from deportation. His status, however, expired, Capital B Atlanta reported.

The HBCU community rallied together to support Maganda as he remained detained in Texas. AS Blavity previously reported, Morehouse alum JaMarcus Toomer and Spelman College graduate Lynae Vanee were two of the most vocal supporters.

“I am reaching out with an urgent plea for assistance regarding our brother, friend, and classmate, Alex Maganda, a member of the Class of 2018, who has recently been detained by ICE,” Toomer wrote on Instagram.
