My Truth: Make the Dream a reality

By Cheryl Smith

The Realizing the Dream Healthy Living Expo has something for the entire family on Monday, January 19, 2026 at the South Dallas Cultural Center.  Since 2016, we have been hosting the Expo because, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we are dreamers.  In the spirit of Dr King, we are also workers and we realize the importance of service to mankind.

We want a strong community and world. Working together, the dream can become a reality. There will be a wonderful parade going on beginning at 9 am, as we will be gearing up for the Expo so everyone can have something to do when the parade is over.

So come on down to the South Dallas Cultural Center 3400 Fitzhugh Avenue, 9a-5p.

The University of North Texas at Dallas Law School, in collaboration with the Realize the Dream Volunteer, will be signing up volunteers to participate in this project to gather 100 million volunteer hours by 2029, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 100th birthday will be celebrated.

The Dream Cook-off will feature local chefs, cooks, aunties, grannies, and even an uncle or two competing for the title of ‘Best Soul Food Dish’ in Dallas. We researched some of Dr. Martin Luther King’s favorite meals, and every year, one of these dishes is featured in the Cook-Off.  Macaroni and Cheese was a favorite of Dr. King. Last year, judges feasted on collard greens and cornbread!  Complete the form and present your Macaroni and Cheese before our judges — and you can debate whether to use sour cream, roux, egg, flour, and someone even suggested sugar!  Do you like yours creamy or solid?
