Florida A&M football will enter the 2026 season with two major vacancies after both its head coach and starting quarterback are departing the program.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback RJ Johnson III announced on that he intends to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to 247 Sports.

The move came just a day before the university fired head coach James Colzie III, who compiled a 12–12 record across two seasons, including a 5–7 finish in 2025—the Rattlers’ first losing campaign since 2017.

Johnson, an Atlanta native, emerged as the starter after winning a training camp competition in 2024. In his first full season under center, he completed 215 of 331 passes (65%) for 2,597 yards and 18 touchdowns, adding three rushing scores while throwing only four interceptions in 11 starts.

FAMU now begins an offseason search for both a new head coach and starting quarterback as it looks to rebound in 2026 and return to championship contention within the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
