Southern University’s search for a new head football coach has once again brought an NFL name to the forefront: Marshall Faulk.

HBCU media YouTube personality Scottay of Offscript TV first reported on a live stream broadcast of the show that Faulk spoke with school officials and is “the leading candidate” for the job.

Kevin Batiste, a sports reporter with WAFB in Baton Rouge, also indicated university officials recently interviewed  Faulk in Colorado, where Faulk currently serves as the running backs coach under former Jackson State coach Deion Sanders.

Faulk, who began his Buffaloes coaching stint this season, is no stranger to Southern’s coaching rumor mill. His name was previously floated as a candidate in 2021 after Dawson Odums left for Norfolk State—a search that ultimately saw Jason Rollins take the reins for one year as interim head coach.

This time, Faulk is among 10 reported finalists for the job to replace Terrence Graves, who was fired earlier this season, according to Batiste.

The school is expected to name its new head coach following the Bayou Classic, he said.

Southern’s ongoing pursuit of a coach able to reinvigorate its football program adds intrigue, especially with a candidate as high-profile and decorated as Faulk back in the mix.

Faulk, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Super Bowl champion, and NFL MVP, does not have any head coaching experience; however, as a New Orleans native, he would be a viable candidate for the job.
