Our Voices: Truth is…

By Dr. Keisha Lankford

As a high school Criminal Justice teacher at the Law Magnet, sociology professor at Mountain View College, Assistant principal at Advantage Academy, and School Board Trustee of Cedar Hill ISD, I cringed entering the test score outcomes portion of professional development or academic updates.

Why?

Because we (African Americans) were traditionally scoring amongst the lowest sub-group, not because we weren’t capable, but because we weren’t focused!

I so hope parents/guardians take this teachable moment with the principal in DISD to talk to their children about being focused on learning and performing at the best of their ability regarding education.

As much as I hate to admit it, sometimes, some of our babies are the hardest to get to buy into the educational process for various reasons.

Sometimes they’re too distracted, too entitled, too sassy, too deprived, too disrespectful…but often they’re the most resilient and almost ALWAYS most talented.

I know very well, because that kid was me. I was an ABCD student in high school, but graduated from an undergraduate collegiate program in three years!

I know our communities are complex, and so are our situations.

That’s why we created The Avenue PRC, Inc., a college and career readiness youth program that leaves a legacy with our children to SOAR!

We have taken over 28 college and cultural tours, given away thousands in scholarships, hosted dozens of leadership and empowerment seminars/events — all for our youth and families!

With minimal support!

Our youth need to be inspired and motivated!

All in all, I would rather they know the truth and be a little offended than to be cuddled like they’re competing and not even being considered as one of the best academically!
