Every time I saw her, a smile immediately came to my face. Whether it was seeing her at an event or watching her on the screen as she attended services at Friendship-West Baptist Church,
When I last saw her in public, the three words I spoke to her were: “I love you,” as I hugged her.
I know I was not alone in those sentiments because there were so many reasons to love Mrs. Barbara Record.
Some love her food, as they frequently visit her family restaurant, Record’s Barbecue, in Oak Cliff, Texas.
Others love her for her helpful nature. Or maybe it was her willingness to not only lift as she climbed, but teach as she learned.
Still, others may focus on her love of family, love of people, and her gracious spirit, spiritual foundation, and focus on doing the right thing all the time.
And lest we forget, how about all the money donated to educate children through Friendship-West Baptist Church?
I was sad to hear about Mrs. Record’s health issues. I had to smile as I thought about all the wonderful memories I have of her and her extraordinary work and messages over the years.
Mrs. Record is the epitome of all things noble, gracious, and loving. She is authentic. And she did so much for so many.
When I first met her, in the early 1990s, I was bedridden, and while I had friends who would stop by, for the most part, it was just me and my nephew, Andre.
Talk about a good neighbor!
Mrs. Record was the type of neighbor that you cherished, that you looked forward to having as a visitor, because she came with love, and you knew that she was not bringing negativity, gossip, discord, or evil into your home.
She was a regular visitor, and I was eager to see her coming.
I remember her explaining to Andre which days the trash was picked up, and she told him how to prepare it properly in the various cans. He learned what time to have trash outside in front of the house in the circular driveway, and she told him to make sure to pick up the empty garbage can and return it to its proper place.
I was moving slowly because of my surgery, and she would cook for me and Andre.
Talk about a blessing!
She never made a fuss or talked about how I was a picky eater. Instead, she got in the kitchen, prepared me a healthy meal, and we spent time getting to know one another.
Never once did I hear from anyone about her good deeds for me. She wasn’t taking care of me, so she could be showered with accolades, broadcast information all over town, or get paid for what she did. She’s a giving, loving person.
She extended her love as Alayna and Annya joined the household. Mrs. Record never ran out of love or support. She was the matriarch of the community who didn’t shirk her duties or responsibilities. She wasn’t the one who turned up her nose and frowned. Instead, she rolled up her sleeves and became a member of your family.
We need more matriarchs who realize they rule the village, or otherwise the community can become like the patients ruling the asylum.
She taught Andre and the girls so much, and she also taught me. I’m a better person because of Mrs. Barbara Record.
She genuinely cared. It is in her heart. It is in her spirit. That’s why I love her so much. Please join me and countless others as we pray for her health and well-being.
