Dr. Earl Richardson, Former Morgan State President passes at 81

By: Morgan State University

Dr. Richardson guided Morgan with wisdom, strength, and vision from 1984 until his presidency ended in 2010. Over the course of his 25-year presidency, he ushered in what came to be known as Morgan’s Renaissance—a period of tremendous growth, renewal, and national recognition for our University. His leadership elevated Morgan to the status of a doctoral research institution, expanded academic programs, strengthened faculty excellence, and transformed the campus with more than half a billion dollars in new and renovated facilities.

Under his stewardship, Morgan’s enrollment grew significantly, the qualifications of incoming students rose, and our graduates went on to excel across every field of endeavor. Dr. Richardson’s commitment to excellence and his ability to inspire confidence restored faith in the University at a time when its future was uncertain. He leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, innovation, and an unshakable belief in the transformative power of education.

On a personal note, I am deeply humbled to have followed in the presidency after Dr. Richardson’s tenure. The foundation he built allowed us to continue Morgan’s upward trajectory, and much of what we have achieved in recent years is possible because of the strong platform he left behind.

Dr. Richardson will forever be remembered as a towering figure in Morgan’s history—an exceptional leader whose life’s work profoundly shaped this institution and enriched the lives of countless students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the University. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

As we mourn his passing, let us also honor his extraordinary contributions by rededicating ourselves to the ideals he championed and the mission he so faithfully advanced. Morgan is stronger today because of Earl S. Richardson, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
