FINALLY: Abbott and Texas Republicans Put Flood Victims Second, Racist Maps First

Rep. Gene Wu

Texas families stuck waiting for nearly two months, all while Governor Abbott could have released funds with an Executive Order

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Nearly two months after the deadliest floods in modern Texas history claimed 137 lives, including scores of children, relief is finally on the way —but only after Republicans secured their top priority: manipulating congressional maps to help Donald Trump steal the 2026 election.
Today, the House passed six bills addressing the catastrophic floods and failing emergency notification systems that Texans across the state have been begging for
since June. These critical measures passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, proving what House Democrats have said all along: flood relief could have been delivered immediately if Republicans hadn’t prioritized politics over people’s lives.
Texas House of Representatives Minority Leader Gene Wu issued the following statement:
“The bills passed today could and should have been passed on the first day of the first special session. Instead, Governor Abbott and Republicans forced devastated Texas families to wait while they focused on drawing racist gerrymandered maps to please Donald Trump. The speed with which these flood relief bills passed today should expose the truth to every Texan: Republicans could have done this weeks
ago, but instead chose to make grieving families, destroyed businesses, and shattered communities wait until they finished rigging our elections.”
