Lancaster ISD Mourns Loss of High School Student

Lancaster, TX — Lancaster ISD is heartbroken to share that one of our Lancaster Early College High School
student-athletes died this morning, Wednesday, August 20, 2025, following a medical emergency that occurred
during football practice on Monday, August 18, 2025.
During Monday’s practice, Malone, a sophomore, junior varsity athlete, alerted a coach that he was not feeling
well. Our athletic trainers immediately responded, following UIL heat safety protocols and procedures without
deviation. 911 was called and the student was placed in a cold tub to lower his body temperature. After showing
signs of improvement and speaking to our athletic training staff, he was then transported by EMS to Children’s
Medical Center for further evaluation. We were hopeful for his recovery, but his condition changed overnight,
and he sadly passed away this morning.

Our Lancaster ISD athletic training staff carefully followed all UIL and district heat safety protocols and
procedures, which included adjusting practice times, utilizing indoor facilities, maintaining hydration stations,
monitoring real-time heat conditions, and ensuring certified athletic trainers were on site. When the medical
emergency occurred, our staff responded immediately and with great care for our student.
“Our hearts are broken, and we extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, classmates,
teammates, and teachers during this unimaginable time of loss,” said Dr. A.K. Perera, Superintendent of Schools.
“We ask our community to join us in keeping the family in their thoughts and prayers.”

At this time, our focus is on supporting Preston’s family, teammates, and the entire Lancaster ISD community
through this loss. Grief counselors are available at Lancaster High School and across the district for students and
staff. Additionally, Lancaster ISD has canceled football practices for the remainder of the week, and the
Lancaster High School football scrimmage scheduled for Thursday, August 21, against North Forney has also
been canceled.
