Across Texas and the country, many participated in the National Day of Action, standing in solidarity with organizers mobilizing voters to resist racially discriminatory redistricting efforts that threaten fair representation.

At Friendship-West Baptist Church, a vibrant and energetic rally was held with attendees ready to fight for their freedom. Local leaders and advocates gathered brandishing signs and expressing thir displeasure with legislators who were supporting efforts to “steal votes.”

Speakers included host senior pastor, Rev. Frederick D. Haynes, III, Texas State Senator Royce West, Melinda Hamilton of Mothers of Murdered Angels, Nelica Watts of The Phoenix Ashes Foundation, Hon. Casey Thomas of Our Voice Our Vote, and Stephanie Williams of Black Voters Matter.

Williams reminded the crowd that redistricting is about more than maps, saying you must connect redistricting to health to wealth, and education.

Anthony Taylor, President of Texas Young Democrats, said, “It feels powerful to be amongst the people fighting to make sure that we hold on to our democracy.”

As a new session begins this week, the rally showed what history has long proven: the power of the people is stronger than any attempt to silence their voice.
