This Week in D.C.: I voted NO on the Republicans’ Cruel Bill

Yesterday, I voted NO on the Republican’s so-called “Budget Reconciliation” bill. Let me tell you why.

This bill was already bad and reckless when House Republicans sent it to the Senate—and somehow, Senate Republicans sent it back to the House with even more damage.

It slashes Medicaid. It guts SNAP. It hands out tax breaks to billionaires while working families are left to suffer.

I will never vote to take health care away from the 1.6 million Texans who rely on Medicaid. I will never vote to take food out of the mouths of the 115,000 people in my district who depend on SNAP to feed their families.

This bill will hurt real people. Rural hospitals and nursing homes will shut down. Grocery bills will go up while food assistance goes down. Some families in TX-30 could see their insurance premiums double or even triple.

My Democratic colleagues and I tried to hold the line. We offered amendments to protect people’s health care, to protect food assistance, to protect our most vulnerable. Every single one was rejected. Republicans didn’t want to make this bill better—they wanted to push it through, no matter the cost.

And for what? To help Trump and his rich friends get richer? There’s nothing “beautiful” about this bill. It’s an abomination, and Republicans are responsible for every bit of it.

While they’re gutting programs that keep folks alive, they’re also adding over $3 trillion to the deficit—the largest deficit increase in the history of our country. So much for “fiscal responsibility.”

Let’s be clear: Republicans didn’t pass this bill for the people. They passed it to please Trump, protect the powerful, and push cruelty disguised as policy. I’m not here for that. I stand with the people of Texas 30—and I’m going to keep fighting back against the Republicans’ attacks on the American people every step of the way.
