Prairie View A&M names Tremaine Jackson next head football coach

HBCU football programs express interest in Teddy Bridgewater to coach

Prairie View A&M introduced its new head football coach on Tuesday, and Tremaine Jackson made it clear what his ambition is as the new Panther In Charge.

“I made this statement before, and I stand by it; when we come off that hill, there’s going to be trouble,” Jackson said. “We’re going to be prepared at a high level to be competitive.”

Jackson, who led Valdosta State to the NCAA Division II championship game this past season, replaces Bubba McDowell, who was let go following a 17-18 record over three seasons.

Jackson said that the Panthers would be competitive and not just on the SWAC level.

“We’re not here to be an elite SWAC school,” he said. “We’re here to be a premier, elite FCS program.”

Jackson’s statement lines up perfectly with a quote from PVAMU athletic director Anton Goff in a piece by the Defender Network after McDowell’s firing.

“We are looking for someone who obviously is a good football mind, a great leader, great communicator, someone who can come in and makes sure our players are disciplined,” Goff told the Defender’s Terrance Harris. “The SWAC West isn’t our goal. It’s the SWAC title; it’s getting to the FCS playoffs if, for some reason, we aren’t in the SWAC title game.”
