Wash, DC – It was a fitting ceremony for royalty as President Joe and Jill Biden welcomed President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto of the Republic of Kenya to the South Lawn of the White House, last week, marking the 60th anniversary of the United States and Kenya’s partnership.

Joined by other dignitaries including Vice-President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff and high-ranking military officials, Biden spoke of the ending of the British colonial rule of the country.

“It was a moment that forever connected our two nations. At the stroke of midnight on December 12, 1963, the world changed,” said President Biden. “Many Americans and many people around the world watched with great hope and great anticipation as hundreds of thousands of Kenyans came together, raised the new flag, declared their freedom, and gave life to a new nation.”

President Ruto also provided remarks beginning with the Swahili greeting, “Jambo,” which is similar to “Hello.”

He focused on mutual challenges of climate change, insecurity, and debt distress.

“Today as we celebrate our past and we are optimistic about our future,” said Ruto, as he talked about strengthening the US and Kenya partnership. “By undertaking this state visit, we will have the ability to discuss and to have a conversation about building global partnership and leadership around the issues that pose challenges regionally, globally, and in countries like Kenya and many others.”

Later that evening President and First Lady Biden hosted a State Dinner at the White House for President and First Lady Ruto.
