State of Black America

ATLANTA (April 24, 2023) – Last Tuesday, April 18th, the National Urban League released the annual “State of Black America.”

The report warned that the country was facing a crisis of hate and extremism within its own borders.

In summary, the report said, “the alarm around the explosive growth of far-right and domestic extremism and the threat it poses to our communities, our families, and our nation.”

Marc H. Morial, president and CEO of the National Urban League, said, “There’s a fire blazing in the United States of America. That fire is burning through democracy.”

The event releasing the report was held at Morehouse College, in Atlanta.

The annual report also detailed how extremist views have permeated the country – from politics, law enforcement, military, and even our classrooms.

Speaking on how states have taken to limiting Black contributions in the country’s history, Morial said those efforts are trying to “erase a truthful, albeit sometimes painful recitation of the role that race (has) played.”

Morial also spoke about Florida’s blocking of a new African American studies Advanced
Placement class, saying the block was “disrespecting the important legacy and history of our people.”

He noted, “We will not be fooled. We will not be tricked.
It is not a parent’s rights movement. It is a hate movement in fancy clothing.”
