With all the coaching changes happening around the HBCU basketball landscape, Texas Southern committed to one of its own.

Longtime coach Johnny Jones signed a three-year contract extension that keeps him under contract with Texas Southern through the 2029 season.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the generous contract extension by our esteemed TSU Board of Regents, Madam President Dr. Mary Evans Sias, and VP of Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger,” said Jones following the announcement of his contract extension. “We are deeply honored by the trust and confidence they have placed in us. This extension not only signifies a commitment to our team but also reflects a shared vision to push the boundaries of excellence in our program.”

Coming to TSU in 2018 following a five-year stint at LSU, Jones has led the team to a 106-90 overall record, including a 68-35 record against SWAC opponents.

He secured his 400th career win in Texas Southern’s regular-season finale against Prairie View A&M this past season.

In addition, Jones also guided Texas Southern to three straight SWAC tournament championships from 2021-2023 despite not winning a regular season championship in any of those years.

He is one of only three active men’s or women’s Division I HBCU basketball coaches to lead his team to three straight NCAA tournament appearances, along with former Hampton coach David Six and North Carolina Central coach Levelle Moton.
