Port-au-Prince- In Haĩti’s capital, the week of March 25 has been marred by relentless armed gang attacks, plunging downtown into chaos and forcing mass displacement among the populace.
Pharmacies near the capital general hospital were ransacked and set ablaze on March 25. Owners and employees made desperate efforts to salvage what remained of vital supplies.
Violent confrontations between law enforcement and armed factions erupted across various parts of the capital, claiming the life of a police officer and injuring two others, while 17 suspected criminals were reportedly killed in clashes.
The United States and Canada and other countries have initiated evacuation flights to relocate their citizens from Haiti to the neighboring Dominican Republic. On March 24, armed assailants in Village-de-Dieu opened fire on a helicopter passing over the 3rd district of Port-au-Prince.
One month after the latest escalations, Port-au-Prince remains gripped by paralysis inflicted by armed gangs, with government institutions, schools, and select commercial banks shuttered. The escalating violence has exacted a heavy toll on civilians and law enforcement alike, fostering an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty across all sectors of Haitian society.
