DOVER – Delaware State University Director of Athletics, Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson announced on Wednesday, March 20 that Jazmone Turner has been named the Women’s Basketball Head Coach, officially removing the Interim tag from her title.

“To God be the glory! I am grateful and humbled to earn this opportunity,” head coach Jazmone Turner said. “I want to thank President Allen and Dr. Gadson for believing in me to lead this program back to the success it has had.”

“We are headed in that direction, and we are excited for what’s to come.”

“We are excited to have Coach Jazmone continue to lead the women’s basketball team, and we look forward to her success with our women’s basketball program,” said Director Athletics Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson.

Native to Dayton, Ohio, Turner has seven years of Division I collegiate coaching experience and recently served as the Interim Head Coach at Delaware State University.

Before being named the interim head coach, Turner served as the assistant coach at Delaware State for two years. Turner had a three-year stint at Coppin State University as the associate head coach, where she played a key role in the development of All-MEAC guard Brooke Fields during her time at Coppin State.

Under the development of Turner, Fields was named a Boxtorow second-team All-American and first-team All-MEAC. Fields averaged 19.9 points and 4.7 assists while shooting 81% from the free-throw line during MEAC play. Fields went on to sign a contract with Baerum Basket Bekkestua in Norway.

Her achievements include the most regular season wins for the Delaware State women’s basketball team in the last four seasons. Also, under Turner’s belt, the women’s basketball team defeated the University of Delaware 69-66 on December 21 in Memorial Hall. That marked the first win over the Blue Hens since 2019.

“We are not rebuilding, we are restructuring and transforming the program. Delaware State’s women’s basketball program has had success.” “My staff and I are working tirelessly to get us back to where we once were.”

“Hornet Nation Stand Up! We want to thank our supporters, alumni, staff, and students who continue to believe in us and support us.”
