Behind Every Door Cares About Poverty

By Allana J. Barefield
Staff Writer

Everyone has a story and it’s important to take time to listen. A nonprofit organization, Behind Every Door (BED), is doing just that by using the listening approach and programming that reaches all ages.

From hosting Senior Bingo Night to running an after-school care program for children, their goal is to spark communication around poverty.

BED focuses on four main pillars: education, exploration, expression and encounter with the purpose of helping urban residents invest in their community instead of trying to leave. BED Members say that many people assume that poverty reflects materialistic belongings, but that’s not always the case.

“It is important to have conversations around poverty,” said Darrion Lewis, vice president of BED  “It is through conversation that we understand just how universal poverty is, who owns it, and what it will take to change the narrative.”
