Emma Rodgers Honored in D Magazine

Emma Rodgers is featured as a Community Hero in D Magazine’s August 2020 Best of Big D: Heroes Edition.

D Magazine publishes the special edition each August featuring “the best that our city has to offer.” This year, instead of featuring heroes in categories, the magazine featured individuals and companies that stepped up to help in large and small ways during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rodgers and the other featured heroes were chosen from among 900 nominations, D Magazine editors said. Rodgers recently created a series of YouTube videos to help parents and families through social isolation at home during the pandemic.

To produce the videos, Rodgers collaborated with Bishop Arts Theatre Center where she is a faithful advocate and supporter. The videos are “Storytime at Bedtime” and designed to entertain children and give parents some relief time. The project grew to include submitted works from authors around the nation.

Rodgers is involved in various other areas of community work, particularly in arts, history and literature. She founded the Dallas Civil Rights Museum in the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in South Dallas. She also founded and managed Black Images Book Bazaar that closed in 2006 after about 30 years of operation.

For most of that time, Black Images was in Wynnewood Shopping Center at Zang Boulevard and Illinois Avenue in Oak Cliff. The store hosted and featured many noted authors and public figures reading and discussing their published works to the public.
