Jamal Walker is Bringing Virtual Singing to the Classroom

By Allana J. Barefield

DeSoto East Middle School choir teacher Jamal Walker was handpicked to sing on CBS Sunday Morning at the end of July. The Whitacre’s Virtual Choir had a total of 17,572 participants from 129 countries. Eric Whitacre who is a Grammy-award winner composed the virtual event. Everyone went on camera at the same time to sing a new song called “Sing Gently.” Walker was excited to participate in an event that brings joy to people since COVID has taken over so many people’s lives. He also thought it was a historic moment to be one of six chosen choristers.

For the thousands of participants, everyone recorded themselves on camera and sent their edition to the song. Walker waited in excitement to see the end product and thought it was beautiful especially from the diversity on the screen. For this moment, Walker is excited to implement doing this exact event with his students come fall under the Desoto ISD Anytime, Anywhere Learning plan.
