New Yorkers to Vote on Four Important Issues

The New York State electorate will have the opportunity to vote on the approval of four different issues during the midterm elections on November 8th. These issues will affect both the state and the city.

The first issue that residents of New York can vote on is the passing of the Environmental Bond Act of 2022. This would allow the state to borrow $4.2 billion to embark on environmental projects such as the improvement of water infrastructure, launching renewable energy facilities, and introducing zero-emissions school buses. “This is really smart fiscal strategy,” said Peter Iwanowicz, Executive Director of Environmental Advocates NY. “It’s great environmental policy. And on the back end, we’re going to create all these jobs.”

The second matter to be decided at the ballot is the drawing up of a statement of values that would be added to the city’s charter. “It sets a framework. It sets values,” said Susan Lerner of Common Cause New York. “It sets a morality and it reminds our officials what’s important.” Lerner highlighted how this would have an impact on the prospective passing of policy.

The third matter will see residents vote over the installation of a racial equity commission. This commission will be required to release regular reports on how to reduce racial disparities in New York City. “This is a commission that has to think tangibly, what policies will help ensure that everybody is treated equally and everybody has the same opportunity in our city,” Lerner said.

The final proposal that will be voted on would require the city to determine the true cost of living in New York. This would have to be a true calculation based on the real income and expenditure of residents. “If you are a resident of New York City, how much does it actually cost you to stay alive in the city? That’s really what this is,” Lerner said. “Let’s be honest about the costs and not let’s not use some artificial method.”

These issues are important and can have a positive impact on the residents of New York. It is also important that they are given the opportunity to vote on matters that may directly have an impact on them.
