Editor’s note: Take a look back into The Dallas Morning News Archives.

This week, the nation will observe the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. From day zero, the day of the attacks, The Dallas Morning News has provided coverage of the event and its aftermath, including its effects on the city and the ensuing war.

The front covers from the 9/11 issues, including anniversaries and special reports, present unforgettable photographs from the attacks. They show the destruction in New York City and Washington, D.C., and begin to tell the story of the human toll. This is made even clearer in the first anniversary special edition that has the names and photographs of the victims from those cities and the United Airlines Flight 93 crash in Pennsylvania.

For this anniversary, the focus returns to these front pages and headlines to revisit coverage on a national level and its ramifications on a local level. The included stories outline long-term consequences of 9/11, from increased security measures to policy changes across North Texas. The images stand alone.
