Hollywood’s Movie Review: The Gentlemen

By Michael Hernandez
Entertainment Reporter

The Gentlemen is a new English-gangster film directed by Guy Ritchie. The movie revolves around Mickey, played by Matthew McConaughey, who’s a transplanted American living in England and running the biggest weed operation in the country. The trouble starts when Mickey decides he wants to sell his illegal drug operation and settle down with his beloved wife, Rosalind (Michelle Dockery).

While Mickey is negotiating with an Oklahoma billionaire to sell his operation, he is confronted by some other criminal syndicates who want to buy his profitable business as well. The involvement of the other bad guys in the story makes for some really good action in the film and a lot of plot twists and turns which are well thought out by director Ritchie, who also wrote the film.

The supporting actors are strong. Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Ferrell, and Jason Wong all deliver colorful characters that work well together as an ensemble. Ritchie does a great job of pairing up the supporting cast to deliver a very smart crime-caper. The writing is excellent and filled with some memorable one-liners and quips.

“When the lion is hungry, he eats” was my favorite line spoken by McConaughey (right before he shoots one of his rivals dead). The Gentlemen is a very enjoyable movie. It’s rated R for violence and strong language and has a run time of 1 hour and 53 minutes. The movie will stay with you long after you leave the theater. I loved it.

On my “Hollywood Popcorn Scale,” I rate The Gentlemen a JUMBO.
